Email charter.....

Wondering how many times does we spend on email each day?

Since I have Black Berry recently, I noticed that each day, my time engaged with email reply increases significantly. Furthermore, with all those emails with me in the cc loop which do not really get me involved but just "wish to inform you about this, bla bla bla"......

I always can't imaging how does a company operate about 15 to 20 years back when there is no email services? How did they communicate, and how did they survive?

Though email does made our daily communication much more easier, but, as written at Email Charter "We're drowning in email. And the many hours we spend on it are generating ever more work for our friends and colleagues."  Totally agree with the statement!

Come to this, I always question myself of these questions:

  • Does all the emails sent to me relevant or necessary?, and
  • Does all the emails I sent relevant or necessary?

Following are the 10 Rules to Reverse the Email Spiral as suggested by Email Charter:

  1. Respect Recipients' Time
  2. Short or Slow is not Rude
  3. Celebrate Clarity
  4. Quash Open-Ended Questions
  5. Slash Surplus cc's
  6. Tighten the Thread
  7. Attack Attachments
  8. Give these Gifts: EOM NNTR
  9. Cut Content-less Responses
  10. Disconnect!

Think about it......

Thinking of getting this book for my reference SEND: Why People Email So Badly and How to Do It Better (Vintage)

how many time we are sending email instead of......

How many time we choose to send email instead of picking up the phone?

Why we choose to send email instead?

Even though we are aware that misunderstanding can be easily created by our act of sending email.

As an act to show our superiority? Avoidance?

In my opinion, it would be best if we can just walk to our colleague's desk to have a discussion.

can't read email or just ignorance......

Irony, currently more and more people are relying on email to convey their messages, yet there are people who still do not really know how to read email (s).......(think twice) or is it due to the fact that there are people out there not really know how to write an proper email?
