A single sperm has 37.5MB of DNA information in it.
That means that a normal ejaculation represents a data transfer of 1,587.5TB.

WOW!
Nothing special, but some ordinary thoughts from a delver who always wandering and wondering...... after all, grown-ups always need explanations......

ultrasonic hearing test and our age......
Ultrasonic ringtones are the new ringtones that are at higher frequency than the normal tones.
As we age, the frequency range that our ears can hear decreases. For instance, almost everyone should be able to heat the lowest tone which is 8 kHz. Majority adults should be able to hear up to around 14.1 kHz and to hear the range of 17 kHz onwards, we need to be under 20 years old.
And below is my ultrasonic hearing test result which can be done at www.ultrasonic-ringtones.com.
You are in your twenties |
You can still hear reasonably well and you can play this without my old fart colleagues hearing it which makes you feel kinda good. The highest pitched ultrasonic mosquito ringtone that I can hear is 15.8kHz |
Find out which ultrasonic ringtones you can hear! |
Looks like my ears are still YOUNG!!!!!!

Scientist falsified research data......
The act of Philippe Bois to falsified data in two published papers has caused him to be banned from participating in federally funded research projects for 3 years.
This news suddenly made me remembered of The SPEED of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything
which I read few years ago.
The news for the act of distrust also travel quite fast though.
I always can't imagine why there is a scientist who wish to falsified the data. One the top of that, I really can't think of a solid reason for his act. To me, publication in science is always been viewed as knowledge sharing.
Is it due to the following reason:
Not sure if there first case was done by Hwang Woo-suk in Korean Stem Cell Scandal?
I guess, currently there is a sad shift in the purpose for scientists to do their research and get their finding (s) published, and I hope scientific committee should be aware of it and take it seriously.

- To get more research grant,
- To get his job secured, or
- To get promoted as soon as possible by achieving KPI set by the institute?

New thing (s) / idea (s) learnt each day_8
Perhaps it is time for us to have more online seminar/ conference and meeting since air traffic has been poised to become a major factor in global warming......

"c" for cattle
牛
This post is responding to one of the news I read in Reuters.com entitled "Cattle genes may give clues about human health" as several points I quoted below attract my attention
One of my reasons would be, the marked difference between human nutrition and cattle nutrition. As we are aware of, too much of meat product, especially red meat is associated with higher cancer incidence. Furthermore, people who avoided meat are much less likely to develop cancer. But yet, contraindicate findings been reported over the time regarding this subject, and I personally think that the meat: vegetable consumption ratio could provide us some indications to these contraries.
Besides that, fiber content in food we consume very likely to help us to get rid of the carcinogens found in our food. Furthermore, it can prevent disruption in the sensitive balance of beneficial bacteria in our gut. This prevents the inflammation of our digestive walls and disturbance to the gut-associated immune system.
Having said that, besides genetics, the food, that is forage, taken by cattle is very likely to prevent them or reduce their incidence of getting cancer.
However, it is still too early to derived at any conclusion, and all the points I pointed out are just merely my personal opinions.
As I am a strong believer that a disease is an unique interaction between host, agent and environment.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Scientists have created the first genetic blueprint of domestic cattle, saying on Thursday the map may lead to tastier beef, better milk and even new insights about human health.Regarding cancer, I am quite curious how this scientific finding helps to prevent or reduce cancer incidence in human.
The Hereford cow's is the first mapped livestock animal sequence, and the researchers think it will help explain how cattle evolved, why they ended up with a four-chambered stomach, and why they almost never get cancer.
"Having the genome sequence is now the window to understanding how these changes occurred," said Harris Lewin of the University of Illinois, who worked on the research published in two reports in the journal Science.

"S" for swine flu
豬流感病毒
Again the world has been awaken by another close possibility to flu pandemic, and this time it is from swine, the swine flu virus.
Authorities, such as CDC and WHO, have done great jobs to keep the disease under the control at the moment.
Looking back at what has happened recently regarding the outbreak of zoonotic diseases with the potential of causing pandemic, such as SARS, avian flu, Nipah virus, and now swine flu, one thing that we can't missed is mostly, if not all, these viruses are from the highly congested livestock areas such as farms and markets.
Perhaps, a total change in the current paradigm of livestock management practices into a better one for disease control should be implement.
Perhaps I am a too impractical person possessing a "too scientific fantasy" brain that always thought of the possibility of reverse genetic phenomenon where the feed, water, and waste in these farms containing the building blocks of these contagious viruses where the farm environment serves as a great incubator for the packing of these building blocks to form functional and contagious viruses to take place prior to infecting human.
All this is just my imagination.

"I" for irony
具有諷刺意味的, 諷刺
Felt very irony while discovery this headline at Reuters; which sound like this " FDA slightly eases access to morning-after pill".
After reading this article, I felt even irony about this issue when there is a paragraph that sounds like this
I felt irony because previously lots of people are against the use of human papilloma virus vaccine injection to pre-teen of the age 11 years old. The main reason for this is their concern of the increase in sexual activity which promotes promiscuity among teen.
Irony, and I will read more about this issue......

After reading this article, I felt even irony about this issue when there is a paragraph that sounds like this
The FDA on Wednesday said it would allow nonprescription access to 17-year-olds as soon as it received necessary information from the drug's maker, Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc, now part of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
"The government will not appeal this decision," the FDA said in a statement on its website.
Women's health advocates cheered the FDA's decision, with some adding that access should be loosened even more, to allow shelf sales without age restrictions. They along with company officials argue it is critical for women to have quick access to the drug, which aims to prevent pregnancy when used within 24 hours of sexual intercourse.

"c" for Cancer Stem Cell
腫瘤幹細胞
Yesterday, during an interview with the press, one of the topic that I took quite a long time to clarify is regarding to cancer stem cells.
To lots of people, when they heard of stem cell and cancer, immediately they are thinking of the normal or good (I would put it) stem cell such as those from bone marrow that are used to alleviate some of the adverse effect faced by the cancer patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy.
They hardly can imagine, there is a group of stem cells that are evil or cancerous that are found in the cancer cell population itself.
So, what is cancer stem cell then?
That is why, on Sep 11th 2008, there is one striking heading published in The Economist
At this point, I am wondering, under tumor microenvironment, these cancer stem cells are existed. If we managed to revert these tumor microenvironment to normal microenviroenment where normal cells are living, can these cancer stem cells revert to normal stem cells? As currently, there is hypothesis indicating that cancer stem cells could be derived from normal stem cells that undergo cancerous mutation.

The cancer stem cells, is a small subset of cancer cells, which constitute a reservoir of self-sustaining cells with the exclusive ability to self-renew and maintain the tumor. These cancer stem cells have the capacity to both divide and expand the cancer stem cell pool and to differentiate into the heterogeneous nontumorigenic cancer cell types that in most cases appear to constitute the bulk of the cancer cells within the tumor. In order words, they are......

are cancer cells (found within tumors or hematological cancers) that possess characteristics associated with normal stem cells, specifically the ability to give rise to all cell types found in a particular cancer sample. These cells are therefore tumorigenic (tumor-forming), perhaps in contrast to other non-tumorigenic cancer cells. These cancer stem cells, currently, is believed as one of cause of cancer recurrent after anti-cancer therapy been stop when a cancer patient been certified as cured from cancer. This is mainly because these cancer stem cells still remain in the cancer patient as these cells are resistance to most conventional chemotherapies widely used to date.

Viewing these phenomena, till late, very little is known about all these cancer stem cells and researches are on-going to understand them further and to discover novel therapy that specifically targeting these cells.

"T" for targeted therapies in oncology......
靶向治療
One of the sentence that Tom Peters has said that I like to quote him all the time is "Excellence comes from human beings doing things of value that customers find memorable. " How true......
All these years, scientists around the worlds are trying hard to find targeted therapy for cancer patients. Though seems targeted, but yet still caused some damage to non-cancerous cells, this is the current scenario.
The cancer patients suffered from trying these drugs and some drugs do not even marketable as they failed in clinical trials due to great adverse effects.
Perhaps this is the price we have to pay......
Just imagine...... cancer cells evolved from normal cells, even at the stem cell level...... And most of the markers discovered now, shared between normal and cancerous cells; for those that are not shared, eventually will be linked to certain pathways that are essential to the survival of cells from vital organs......
To be excellence in the journey of discovering targeted therapy in cancer, perhaps, would be when one or a group scientists says, "Please try on me, I want to prove that it is totally harmless to someone that does not have cancer like me"......
Never give up, it is the moment that worth waiting; never give up too early......
